Ip Man uses jigsaw mats for wing chun training

China’s first UFC champion Zhang Weili

China has their first UFC champion with the victor by Zhang Weili over Jessica Andrade at UFC Shenzhen over the week end. Fighting in her home country China, Zhang Weili readily beat Brazilian Jessica Andrade with a tsunami of punches from which Andrade was not able to recover. Zhang finished the fight via a TKO that came in the first 42 seconds of the first round.  Zhang is now officially first ever UFC champion from China. She is also  the second UFC titleholder ever born in Asia. China’s success in the UFC should continue with the UFC opening a $13M performance centre in Shenzhen to develop talent.

Zhang Weili was born in Hebei, which is a coastal province in northern part of China. Hebei is known for kung fu, a Chinese martial art, and here is a strong kung fu presence in Zhang’s hometown of Handan, which is how Zhang was introduced to combat sports. Zhang states that her  favourite fighter  in the UFC is Tony Ferguson. Videos of Ferguson show him training with the wooden dummy and other aspects of Wing Chun. Although not the classic form of Hong Kong Wing Chun it is interesting that he uses it it his training.

What’s next for Zhang is anyones guess. After going back to her BJJ mats for some training surely she will be up for a challenge against other UFC fighters keen to take her on. With a rounded martial arts such as Zhang it would be no surprise if she were back at The Black Tiger Fight Club in Beijing training on the martial arts mats for another fight. A dedicated fighter doesn’t wait before getting back on their BJJ mats or martial arts mats readying themselves for what comes next

Martial Arts Mats for Krava Maga and BJJ

Martial Arts Mats Increasingly Popular

The proliferation of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Krava Maga and other combat sports has greatly increase the popularity of martial arts mats. With a lot of these activities there is a great likelihood of being thrown to the ground. Whats more there are drills which occur on the ground which require protection to lessen the impact.

If you look at Krava Maga, which is an Israeli self-defence system, there are lots of moves which see your partner thrown to the ground, sometimes even violently. The danger of sustaining injury through these encounters requires some kind of safety mat to mitigate the force of the through. This is where martial arts mats come in and are effective in reducing the risk of getting hurt.

With martial arts like BJJ and grappling there is a definite need for martial arts mats. You will not see a school or training area for these systems that is not fitted out with gym mats of some kind. Sometimes they are roll out mats at other times they will use foam mats or jigsaw mats. Generally they will be an interlocking mat however for a more durable mat they will often took at using tatami mats or MMA mats. One thing is for sure. They will have a martial arts mat of one kind or the other.

So if you are looking at improving the safety of your schools environment then consider a safety mat. They are often light weight and easy to more and store, and they are sure to at least reduce the risk of injury. Of course the best prevention for injury is common sense and care.

Market Watch – AUD and Jigsaw Mats

The USD was heavily sold in Thursdays session after the Feds meeting giving the AUD its biggest one day rise in over 2 years, this now seems like a massive over reaction and a correction taking he USD back to the top of the currency pile has seen the AUD/USD fall 200 points from its peak. Iron ore prices continue to weigh in on the commodity driven unit after failing to rebound off its weakest level since early 2009. The Australian share market also looks set to open up weaker this morning  following falls on wall street where energy stocks fell as well as the price of oil.

Whilst the falling Australian dollar has impacted on EVA jigsaw mats pricing, Ezymats still offer the most competitively priced jigsaw mats.

Market Watch – Australian Dollar

AUD lost 0.5% across the board yesterday ahead of the Unemployment Rate and Employment Change releases at 11:30 this morning. It traded slightly higher yesterday after Westpac Consumer Sentiment surprisingly jumped from 2.4% to 8% and Home Loans increase by the most since November 2013. It headed lower overnight as overseas investors anticipated a 0.1% increase in the Unemployment Rate to 6.2%. The number of employed people is also forecast to drop after three consecutive months of gains.

The price of our jigsaw mats are still holding steady. The recent fall in the dollar has not impact pricing for jigsaw mats at Ezymats. Ezymats still continues to be the best and cheapest supplier in Australia and the Southern Hemisphere.

EVA Interlocking Jigsaw Mats for MMA

EVA interlocking jigsaw mats such as those sold by Ezymats are a form or safety flooring commonly used by a variety of martial arts especially MMA (mixed martial arts). They are used to minimise the impact of falling during training. All martial arts have training methods which from time to time necessitate falling to the floor. Especially in MMA, where there is combination of martial arts including judo and wrestling,  students can be expected to throw one another on to the mats. Jigsaw mats are an excellent way to mitigate the effects of being thrown or falling. Also where there is grappling or rolling on the flour jigsaw mats help create a clean even surface to training to take place.

EVA (Ethylene vinyl acetate)

EVA is one of the materials popularly known as expanded rubber or foam rubber. EVA foam is used as padding in equipment for various sports such as ski boots, bicycle saddles, hockey pads, boxing and mixed martial arts gloves and helmets, wakeboard boots, waterski boots, fishing rods and fishing reel handles. It is typically used as a shock absorber in sports shoes, for example. It is used for the manufacture of floats for commercial fishing gear such as purse seine (seine fishing) and gillnets. In addition, because of its buoyancy, EVA has made its way into non-traditional products such as floating eyewear. It is also used in the photovoltaics industry as an encapsulation material for silicon cells in the manufacture of photovoltaic modules. EVA slippers and sandals are currently very popular because of their properties like light weight, easy to mold, odorless, glossy finish, and cheaper compared to natural rubber. In fishing rods, it is used to construct handles on the rod-butt end. EVA can be used as a substitute for cork in many applications.

EVA is used in the manufacture of the Adidas Jabulani football and Native shoes. EVA is used in orthotics, fire safe cigarettes (FSC), surfboard and skimboard traction pads, and for the manufacturing of some artificial flowers. It is used as a cold flow improver for diesel fuel and a separater in HEPA filters. EVA can easily be cut from sheets and molded to shape. It is also used to make thermoplastic mouthguards that soften in boiling water for a user specific fit. It is also used for impregnation of leather. Additional uses are in the making of nicotine transdermal patches since the copolymer binds well with other agents to form gel like substances. EVA is also sometimes used for making body bags. So EVA is a multi-purpose product used in a number of products not just jigsaw mats.

Jigsaw

The jigsaw mats is modelled on the same concept of jigsaw puzzles. A jigsaw puzzle is a tiling puzzle that requires the assembly of numerous small, often oddly shaped, interlocking and tessellating pieces. Each piece usually has a small part of a picture on it; when complete, a jigsaw puzzle produces a complete picture. In some cases more advanced types have appeared on the market, such as spherical jigsaws and puzzles showing optical illusions.

Jigsaw mats are available in a number of different thicknesses. The activity usually determines what thickness is used. The higher the impact the thicker the mat. So for example activities such as judo will user a thicker jigsaw mat then say aerobics. Both activities require jigsaw mats to minimise effects on the body and joints.
