Eddie Van Halen Dies

Legendary Guitarist and Superstar Eddie Van Halen Dies

Eddie Van Halen, the legendary hard rock guitarist, died after a long battle with cancer. Eddie was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in 1955, Van Halen’s family emigrated to the United States in 1962.

His father was a big band clarinettist, and his mother was a maid. Both his parents were musically inclined which is no surprise that Eddie would become such a great guitarist. Legend has it that when they immigrated to America that brought their piano with them and played it on the way.

Eddie Van Halen and his brother Alex joined with vocalist David Lee Roth and bassist Michael Anthony to form Van Halen in 1974, in Pasadena, California. They were members of rival high school bands and then attended Pasadena City College together. Their debut album “Van Halen” was an instant success and reached No. 19 on Billboard. The band became phenomenally successful after that with their music played all over the world.

I remember when the band released their song “Jump”. It was the first time I had ever really listened to a hard rock song and I loved it. I even wrote the bands name across my pencil case. I continued to listen to the band and fondly remember my later years where my friends and I would cruise around pumping out songs like “Panama” and “Hot for Teacher”.

Eddie van Halen will be sorely missed and forever remembered. His music will live on throughout the ages. We all know that nobody will replace him no matter what. There are many great guitarists out there but none like Eddie. We at Ezy Mats will always be grateful for the music he gave us.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Dojo Mats

Everybody needs a guide to dojo mats when buying mats. These days not too many people still refer to their training gyms as dojos. There was a time where there was a dojo on every corner. Not so many people use the old terminology anymore. That said there are still a lot of karate and judo dojos around. Any traditional Japanese martial art will still refer to their training area as a dojo. Most of them are also fitted out with dojo mats. Indeed very few dojos these days have no mats. Although there would be a few which would insist on training without dojo mats. Especially certain karate school.

When choosing dojo mats it is important to know what your needs are. It is true that a lot of dojo mats are tatami mats, but they are not the only option. Tatami mats tend to be used in judo schools. In judo school there is a lot of throwing and grappling on the floor. As you sweat on the floor it is good to have a mat which is easy to wipe down. This is where tatami mats come in as they are actually pretty easy to maintain and to keep clean. This convenience however come with a price which is reflected in the cost of buying these mats.

As a guide to buying dojo mays, the other option is EVA jigsaw mats.  You will in fact find that most karate schools use EVA mats for their dojos. The same can be said about tae kwon do as well. In fact EVA jigsaw mats are probably the most popular training mats there is out there. It is no surprise that you can also find them in dojos.

Alistair Overeem Beats Augusto Sakai

Alistair Overeem Beats Augusto Sakai At UFC Fight Night on The Mat

Alistair Overeem Beats Augusto Sakai At UFC Fight Night. Like two lions battling it out Alistair Overeem and Augusto Sakai went at each other on the mat. The two fought hard and fast but only one of them could come out the victor. Alistair Overeem Beats Augusto Sakai with a TKO on the mat. Overeem used all his skill to come record his 47th win, 42 or which were stoppages. Alistair Overeem, who is a former K1 veteran, not only used his kick boxing skills but also takedowns to get Sakai in a position for some ground and pound.

Where to Now for The Former Champ?

Where Alistair goes from he is not know. He is surely going to find himself a Championship belt contended after winning four of his last five fights in the UFC. One thing is for sure is that he will head back to the tatami mats to continue his training. The only place a fighter like Overeem finds comfort is on tatami mats which is where all the hard work takes place to become a champion. One the mats is where you will find all MMA fighter readying themselves for their next fight.

What about Stipe Miocic?

I wonder who the UFC will pair up with Overeem next. Stipe Miocic, the current heavyweight champ, will probably fight Francis Ngannou next, although there is talk of him also maybe fighting Jon Jones. For his part Jone Jones is vacating the Light Heavyweight title and is moving up to heavyweight. That said is might be a few fights away for Overeem for a shot at the title. Even then he would have to continue winning fight. His best bet is to put in effort on the tatami mats to get his skill back to where it needs to be for him to get a shot at the UFC heavyweight title.

Tatami Mats as Karate Mats

Have you ever thought about Tatami Mats as Karate Mats? Tatami mats have been around for a long time. The Japanese had literally used tatami mats in their homes for millennia. In Hollywood blockbuster starring Tom Cruise “The Last Samurai” all the homes in the movie has tatami mats. Indeed every home in Japan at the time had such mats. Even today that have traditional mats in their homes. The mats have a historic and ceremonial place which is integral to daily life. People sit and sip tea just as they did for many centuries. Even in western homes you will some times find tatami mats as a interior design element.

What are tatami mats?

The interesting thing is that as much tatami was used in the home it was also used in training Japanese martial arts. At the time and even today traditional Japanese martial arts use tatami in their dojos. A lot of them refuse you use modern tatami mats, which are made form vinyl and compressed foam, and instead use tatami made through traditional means. Whilst some might find this stupid, it is admirable that people still use the traditional type even though it made training harder.

Other martial arts that use them

Of all the martial arts that use tatami for training the most famous martial art from Japan is karate. Karate schools often us tatami mats as karate mats mainly because of the reason that they represent the historic aspect of the training. That is the thing about karate mats, when you say karate mats you often also think about tatami mats. Make no mistake the kind of mats you use for training will influence the kind of training that you do. If you have good quality mats such as our karate mats then you can be sure that your training will be more successful.
