Markets Overview

In local stock markets the ASX200 finished higher with the local big 4-banks leading the charge with the benchmark index holding above the 5,500 level. The slow performer yesterday was the mining sector which saw some of the larger players such as BHP and Rio Tinto lose some ground.

In overseas markets we saw some big news in European stocks with US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer offering a merger deal with British competitor AstraZeneca. This news coupled with strong performances from other European pharmaceutical giants has seen the industry lift most of the major Euro indexes in overnight trading.

The US stock market saw some steady gains off the back of the Pfizer news and some strong performances from the tech sector but was hampered by a slide from Bank of America shares with news they are suspending dividend and buybacks.

In commodities news we have seen a slight drop in Aluminium and Copper on the London Metals Exchange while traders have started to make a move back to Gold amid rising tensions in Ukraine.

USD

A quiet day yesterday against the USD, a little bit of movement over night with a better than expected pending home sales. The main piece of economic data this week is the employment report on Friday. We may see a little movement this today with consumer confidence steady.

Today Australians celebrate Anzac Day

The Anzac tradition was established on 25 April 1915 when the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

It was the start of a campaign that lasted eight months and resulted in some 25,000 Australian casualties, including 8,700 who were killed or died of wounds or disease.

The men who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula created a legend, adding the word ‘Anzac’ to our vocabulary and creating the notion of the Anzac spirit.

In 1916, the first anniversary of the landing was observed in Australia, New Zealand and England and by troops in Egypt. That year, 25 April was officially named ‘Anzac Day’ by the Acting Prime Minister, George Pearce.

By the 1920s, Anzac Day ceremonies were held throughout Australia. All States had designated Anzac Day as a public holiday. In the 1940s, Second World War veterans joined parades around the country. In the ensuing decades, returned servicemen and women from the conflicts in Korea, Malaya, Indonesia, Vietnam and Iraq, veterans from allied countries and peacekeepers joined the parades.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the number of people attending the ceremonies fell as Australians questioned the relevance of Anzac Day. However, in the 1990s there was a resurgence of interest in Anzac Day, with attendances, particularly by young people, increasing across Australia and with many making the pilgrimage to the Gallipoli Peninsula to attend the Dawn Service.

Today is sure to be a lovely day to celebrate with family and friends and maybe have a BBQ and a game of cricket. Traffic will be light and the streets peaceful.

But for those of us stuck in China on business. Bad Luck!

Ip Man uses jigsaw mats for wing chun training

Donnie Yen Confirmed for Ip Man 3

Donnie Yen plans to make a return to his highly praised Ip Man role in the film series’ third chapter, which is estimated to start filming next year.

Last year, it was believed that Donnie withdrew from Ip Man 3  because producer Raymond Wong  intended to have his son, Edmond Wong, replace the original director, Wilson Yip. However, Pegasus Motion Pictures CEO John Chong said at a press conference in June that the film’s postponement was due to scheduling conflicts, not disparity between the cast and crew. He also dismissed hearsay that Donnie backed away because of disagreements over his salary.

Ip Man 3 was initially planned to be shot from June to September 2013. But, Donnie was occupied in other movie projects. Director Wilson Yip furthermore had additional work obligations throughout that time and therefore advised that Edmond Wong change from screenwriter to director. Edmond was occupied getting ready for his wedding, so filming was deferred until the year after.

The producers anticipate that Ip Man 3 can be filmed sometime next year and mentioned that the movie will be released in 3D.

Soft inflations figure to keep jigsaw mats stable

The soft inflation figures release today should keep the price of jigsaw mats stable.

Consumer prices were softer-than-expected in the first three months of this year, lowering expectations that an interest rate hike could be on the cards later this year.

The headline inflation for the first-quarter of this year rose by 0.6 per cent to take the annual rate to 2.9 per cent. The figures were lower than analysts’ consensus forecasts and keeps the annual growth in inflation within the Reserve Bank’s target band of 2 to 3 per cent.

Although expectation that interest rates would be stable pushed the dollar down, it wasn’t by so much that it could push up the price of imported goods. With jigsaw mats being manufactured overseas this is a good sign.
