Gym Mats Maintenance- The Basics

Gym mats, especially in areas that see a significant amount of traffic, can become unhygienic very quickly. Even when they don’t look visibly dusty or dirty, they can harbour mites, bacteria, mould and germs. While good quality gym mats are specifically-designed to resist all these problems, it’s crucial that they be cleaned with regularity and with the right cleaning solutions.

Some tips

We at Ezy Mats have the following recommendations, when it comes to maintaining gym mats:

  • Type of cleaner– It’s never a good idea to use regular cleaning techniques and cleaners to clean gym mats. Look for a mild yet effective neutral pH cleanser and follow the instructions mentioned on the label.
  • The right method– The very first thing to do is to remove all the dust and debris from the mat. A broom, duster or vacuum cleaner will do the trick and this helps in removing all the loose dust. The next thing to do is to wipe the mats clean with the cleanser. This will help remove the dirt and stains from the gym mats.
  • Disinfect the surfaces– Once you have cleaned all the mats, wipe the surfaces clean with a disinfectant that’s specifically designed for this foam.
  • Clean underneath the mast– Most people forget to lift the mats and clean underneath. Use a dry cloth to wipe the undersides of the mats, and air the surfaces to get rid of any moisture that may be trapped there.

If the surface that’s been covered with gym mats isn’t going to be used for a long time, you should remove the mats, pack them in plastic bags and store them in a dry place; this helps increase the lifespan of the mats.
